Sedan's minting of Double Tournois in the name of Henri IV was a calculated assertion of the principality's autonomy. The tiny sovereign enclave on the Meuse, controlled by the de la Marck and later the Bouillon family, maintained independent coinage rights that French royal authority repeatedly tried to suppress throughout the seventeenth century. Striking pieces that mimicked the royal type — while technically issued under separate sovereignty — was a deliberate provocation as much as a practical monetary decision.
