Henriette of Lorraine ruled Phalsbourg and Lixheim as sovereign princess during one of the most chaotic periods in the region's history — the Thirty Years' War was grinding through Lorraine, and French forces under Richelieu were systematically absorbing the duchy's territories. Her copper coinage of 1633–34 was struck just as this pressure became existential; France formally occupied the Duchy of Lorraine in 1633, making these issues among the last acts of independent monetary authority from a ruling house that would soon have nothing left to govern.
