Additional information

The double tournois was the workhorse of small French copper coinage throughout the later Valois period, and the Poitiers mint — operating under the mint mark P — ran continuously through the Wars of Religion despite the region changing hands between Catholic and Huguenot forces multiple times. Henri III's reign saw chronic underfunding of the royal mints and persistent counterfeiting of these low-denomination pieces, which circulated so heavily among common transactions that worn survivors vastly outnumber anything approaching original surfaces.
