| Beschrijving voorzijde | Bare-headed bust of Henri III facing right, depicted in a cuirassed and ruffed collar style typical of late Valois portraiture, occupying the central field. The bust is rendered in low relief consistent with hammered coinage of the period. A small mintmark letter Z appears in the field to the left of the bust, identifying the Grenoble mint. The circumferential Latin legend reads: + HENRI.III.R.DE.FRAN.ET.POL.PF, with the individual elements presented as separated (détachés) around the periphery of the flan. |

Henri III's double tournois coinage of the mid-1580s was produced against the grinding backdrop of the Wars of Religion, with royal finances under severe strain from sustained military campaigning against the Huguenot forces and the Catholic League simultaneously. The Grenoble mint — identified by its Z mark — was one of several provincial houses pressed into expanded copper production during this period as silver grew increasingly scarce in circulation.
Type B of this issue represents a die modification introduced partway through the Grenoble production run, distinguishing it from the earlier Type A strikes at the same facility.
