Frédéric-Maurice de la Tour d'Auvergne ruled Sedan as a sovereign prince, and the principality's right to strike its own copper coinage was a persistent irritant to the French crown. Louis XIII's government repeatedly pressured the small enclave to conform to royal monetary ordinances, a pressure that intensified through the early 1630s. Sedan's continued independent issues during 1632–33 were as much a political statement as a fiscal one.
The 11th type designation in the CGKL sequence reflects how frequently the Sedan dies were reworked across Frédéric-Maurice's tenure — minor changes in die execution that today allow specialists to reconstruct the approximate chronology of an otherwise sparsely documented mint.
