The double tournois of Charles VIII belongs to a coinage system that had been steadily debased across the fifteenth century, with billon content dropping to the point where contemporaries sometimes refused the coins outright. Charles inherited a monetary mess from Louis XI and spent much of his reign issuing edicts attempting to stabilize small change — with limited success. The "niquet" nickname, applied colloquially to coins of this type, derived from popular slang for low-value billon pieces and stuck long after official nomenclature moved on.
