Charleville was a planned Renaissance city founded in 1606 by Charles de Gonzague, Duke of Nevers, who named it after himself and obtained the right to strike coinage for his principality of Arches-Charleville as a semi-autonomous territorial concession within the French kingdom. The Double Tournois issues from his mint ran through numerous successive types — nineteen distinct variants catalogued under his name alone — reflecting both the longevity of his rule and the mint's steady, small-scale output competing alongside royal French issues of identical denomination.
Charles de Gonzague died in 1637, mid-sequence, meaning this type straddles his death.
