Charleville was the creation of Charles de Gonzague, Duke of Nevers, who founded the planned city in 1606 and named it after himself. The principality of Arches-Charleville occupied a strategically awkward strip of territory within the French kingdom yet outside its monetary jurisdiction, which gave the Gonzague line the right to strike their own copper coinage — a privilege they exploited with considerable vigor throughout the Thirty Years' War period. French royal authorities grew increasingly hostile to these semi-autonomous mints flooding nearby markets with competing petty coinage.
The 14th type designation in the CGKL sequence reflects how frequently the dies were modified across Charles's long output.
