Beschrijving voorzijde Draped bust of Frédéric-Maurice de La Tour d'Auvergne, Duke of Bouillon, facing right, rendered in low relief in the baroque style typical of mid-17th century French feudal coinage. The portrait shows the prince with long flowing hair and an armored or draped shoulder, occupying the central field. A circular Latin legend surrounds the effigy, reading the ruler's abbreviated titles as Prince of Sedan and Duke of Bouillon. The legend is separated from the bust by a linear border. The overall strike is characteristic of hammered copper coinage of the period.

Aanvullende informatie

Frédéric-Maurice de la Tour d'Auvergne issued copper small change from Sedan throughout the early 1640s under increasingly strained circumstances — he had backed the 1641 Cinq-Mars conspiracy against Richelieu, and by 1642 the principality's political survival was openly in question. The French crown absorbed Sedan outright in 1642, making the final issues of this type among the last independent coinages struck there before the mint closed permanently.
