| Opis awersu | Central field displays the papal coat of arms of Clement VIII within an oval cartouche, surmounted by the papal tiara and crossed keys, all suspended from an elaborate decorative knot. The shield is charged with a cross and a field of stars, characteristic of the Aldobrandini family arms. A circular legend in Latin runs along the periphery, interrupted by small ornamental stops, with a milled or grained border encircling the entire design. |

Comtat Venaissin was papal territory on the eastern edge of Provence, administered by a cardinal legate rather than the French crown — which is precisely why this coin exists at all. Under Clement VIII, Cardinal Ottavio Acquaviva d'Aragona served as legate, giving him authority to issue coinage in the papal name from Avignon. France had no say in it.
The eight-year window of this issue tightens considerably when cross-referenced against Acquaviva's actual tenure in the legateship, making die-dated examples the only reliable means of narrowing attribution within the series.
