| 裏面の説明 | The central field depicts a finely detailed high-relief representation of a Droz balance wheel, a historic coining press mechanism associated with Jean-Pierre Droz and symbolic of the Monnaie de Paris. The device rests on a multi-tiered pedestal, its horizontal arm terminating in two spherical counterweights, with a flyweight chain hanging at right. The engraver's signature G. PUDOUX appears below the device in the lower field. The bimetallic border carries the legend 20e ANNIVERSAIRE arching above and the dates 1974 PESSAC 1994 divided by a central dot below, flanked by bullet separators. |

The Double Écu was a French commemorative bimetallic series launched in 1989, deliberately reviving a denomination last struck under Louis XIV. The 1994 Pessac issue honors the Monnaie de Paris facility at Pessac, which had absorbed a significant portion of French coin production after operations there expanded in the 1970s — the mint essentially commemorating itself, a self-referential gesture that struck some collectors as either bold or indulgent depending on their disposition.
