Obverse description Facing busts of Ferdinand and Isabella, both crowned, shown conjoined and facing one another in the Spanish style, within a beaded inner circle. The monarchs are depicted in profile facing each other, wearing ornate crowns with fleurs-de-lis finials and draped in royal robes. A small letter S appears in the field between the busts. The surrounding legend, separated by pellets and a decorative ornament, reads FERDINANDVS : ET : ELISABET : D : G : REX : ET : ✤ : S, invoking the authority of Ferdinand and Isabella by the Grace of God. The entire design is enclosed within a beaded border, characteristic of the hammered coinage of this period.
