Doppio Giulio - Pius VI Oval Shield

Pius VI faced the papacy's most acute fiscal emergency in generations when Joseph II's reforms severed traditional revenue streams from Austrian territories during the 1780s. The doppio giulio circulated under constant monetary pressure, with the papal treasury eventually so depleted that Pius himself would die a French prisoner in Valence in 1799 — the only reigning pope to die in captivity since the Avignon period.

The oval shield variant is distinguished from the round shield type in the Munt sequence, a small but catalogued die distinction that occasionally confuses incomplete attributions.
