Beschrijving voorzijde Central cartouche with elaborate baroque scrollwork flanked by foliate branches, surmounted by the papal tiara above two crossed keys. Within the cartouche, the inscription commemorating the possession of the Lateran Basilica is displayed in multiple lines, with the date 1758 at the base. The circular legend surrounding the design names Clement XIII as Supreme Pontiff in his first regnal year. The entire composition is rendered in high relief with ornate Baroque styling characteristic of mid-eighteenth-century Roman coinage.

Aanvullende informatie

Clement XIII was elected in July 1758 after a conclave deeply divided over Jesuit policy — a tension that would define his entire pontificate. This issue commemorates his Possesso, the ceremonial procession from the Vatican to the Lateran basilica in which a newly elected pope formally took possession of his role as Bishop of Rome. The ritual, rooted in medieval tradition, was one of the last major public acts before the full weight of the Jesuit suppression controversy consumed his reign.

Clement XIII would go on to issue the bull Apostolicum pascendi in 1765, defending the Society of Jesus against expulsion campaigns sweeping Catholic Europe.
