Althea Gibson broke the color barrier at the U.S. National Championships in 1950 and at Wimbledon in 1951, going on to win five Grand Slam singles titles before the Open Era began — meaning she never competed for the prize money that would have made her financially secure. The American Women Quarters Program, authorized under the Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020, gave the Mint a congressional mandate to produce these 99.9% silver collector strikes alongside the standard circulating versions.
Gibson died in 2003, largely forgotten by a mainstream sports audience that had moved on.
