| Obverse description | The allegorical figure of Liberty seated facing left upon a rock, her right hand resting on a heraldic shield bearing the word LIBERTY on a ribbon, and her left hand holding a pole surmounted by a Phrygian liberty cap. Thirteen six-pointed stars encircle the design, seven to the left and six to the right, with the date appearing in the exergue below. Early issues (1838-1840) lack the drapery at Liberty's elbow, while later issues incorporate additional drapery as a design refinement. |
