Sancho I ruled Majorca as a vassal of the French crown — his father James II had signed away that dependency in 1279 — and the dobler was the workhorse denomination of a kingdom perpetually squeezed between Aragonese ambition and Angevin politics. Sancho died in 1324 without an heir, triggering a succession crisis that would eventually allow James III to take the throne, though Aragonese annexation came anyway in 1343.
