To the sinister (viewer's left) of the shield, a dauphin (dolphin) is depicted, denoting the Dauphine mint attribution. The entire design is enclosed within a beaded inner circle, with the circular legend reading KAROLVS FRAnCORV REX (Charles, King of the Franks) in Gothic uncial lettering interrupted by a cross at the top. The strike is characteristic of late fifteenth-century French hammered billon coinage, with slightly irregular flan edges. |
