Obverse description Central field dominated by a large crowned Gothic 'F' monogram for Franciscus (Francis I), surmounted by a royal crown adorned with fleurs-de-lis and foliate ornaments. The monogram is set within a beaded inner circle, with the circular Latin legend reading FRANCISCVS GRA DEI FRANCO REX disposed around the periphery in uncial characters. The overall execution is characteristic of French hammered billon coinage of the early sixteenth century, with bold, slightly irregular lettering typical of the period.
