Obverse description Central field features a crowned Gothic letter K (for Karolus) flanked by two fleurs-de-lis, all within a beaded inner circle. The crown surmounting the K is rendered in the Gothic style typical of late 15th-century French royal coinage. The surrounding circular legend in uncial Latin reads KAROLVS FRANCORVM REX, identifying Charles VIII as King of the Franks. The overall design is characteristic of hammered billon coinage of the Valois monarchy, with an irregular flan and slightly uneven strike.
