Phoenician war galley (bireme) depicted in left profile, navigating over a stylized sea rendered as a row of zigzag waves in the exergue. The vessel features a prominent ram at the prow, a detailed oar bank along the hull, and a fighting deck with shields along the bulwark. A single Phoenician character appears in the upper field above the ship, serving as a control mark or royal identifier. The composition is rendered with bold, confident engraving typical of Sidonian coinage of the early fourth century BC. |

A Persian Great King or satrap, crowned and robed in elaborate court dress, rides in a two-horse chariot moving to the left. A charioteer stands at the reins before him, wearing a Persian kidaris headdress and a billowing cloak. An armed attendant or warrior figure stands to the right of the chariot, facing the scene. The composition is enclosed within a beaded border and exhibits the high-relief, finely detailed engraving characteristic of Sidonian royal coinage under Baalshillem II. The scene reflects the close political relationship between Sidon and the Achaemenid Persian court. |
