| Obverse description | Central field occupied by four lines of Kufic Arabic inscription arranged in horizontal registers within a single linear border, the whole enclosed by a circular margin bearing a continuous Kufic marginal legend. The inner field inscriptions proclaim the Islamic profession of faith (Shahada) and the name of the Abbasid caliph, following the standard Abbasid-style dirham format. The epigraphy is executed in angular early Kufic script characteristic of eastern Islamic coinage of the 3rd century AH. An inner linear circle separates the central field from the outer marginal legend, and a beaded or rope-pattern outer border frames the entire design. |
