Töregene Khatun ruled as regent of the Mongol Empire following Ögedei Khan's death in 1241, one of the few women in Mongol history to exercise supreme authority over the empire in her own name. Coins struck in her name during this interregnum are genuinely rare — most Mongol administrators simply continued issuing in Ögedei's name rather than acknowledge the regency formally on the coinage.
The archer type designation distinguishes this issue from the more common geometric and calligraphic Mongol dirhams of the period. Her regency ended with the election of Güyük Khan at the 1246 kurultai.
