Reverse description Central field inscribed with four lines of Arabic text in Maghrebi script, reading: 'Muhammad ibn Abdallah / Amir al-Mu'minin / Darb bi-Tatwan / [Hijri date]', identifying the sultan Muhammad III ibn Abdallah, Commander of the Faithful, and the mint city of Tetuan together with the Hijri year of striking. The legends are struck in raised relief on a flat, unadorned field typical of the first standard dirham coinage of Sultan Sidi Mohammed III. The planchet is irregular and slightly buckled, consistent with the hand-hammered technique employed at the Tetuan mint. No border or decorative framing elements are present. The Hijri date varies according to the year of issue, ranging from AH 1181 to AH 1196.
