The anepigraphic "ornamental" dirhams of the Bulghar mint occupy an awkward taxonomic space — no ruler name, no date, no Quranic inscription. Whether this reflects a deliberate local minting convention, a transitional administrative gap, or something more disruptive in the Volga region during the late 13th century remains debated. Bulghar itself was a major commercial hub on the Volga trade route, and coinage from this mint circulated heavily into the fur-producing northern territories, where silver by weight mattered more than legibility of legend.
