Reverse description An interlaced geometric diaper pattern composed of curved and straight lines forming a grid of nine inner square compartments, each containing a central pellet. The corners and interstices of the lattice are also adorned with raised pellets, creating a dense ornamental field. The design is entirely anepigraphic and reflects the decorative repertoire common to Bulghar mint issues of the late 13th to early 14th century.

Additional information

The so-called "ornamental" or anepigraphic dirhams of the Bulghar mint are among the more puzzling issues of the Golden Horde — struck without inscriptions at a moment when the khanate's administrative identity was still consolidating after the upheavals following Berke Khan's death. Whether the absence of legend reflects a deliberate aesthetic choice, a transitional monetary policy, or simply local minting practice operating outside central directives remains debated. Sinochkin's classification and the Zeno corpus have helped bring order to what was long treated as an undifferentiated anonymous type.
