Najim al-Din Alpi ruled Mardin for over two decades during one of the most volatile periods in northern Mesopotamian politics — caught between the competing pressures of Zengid expansion under Nur al-Din and the residual Crusader presence to the west. The Artuqid rulers of Mardin maintained their autonomy largely through careful diplomacy rather than military strength, and their coinage reflects a court that was culturally ambitious despite its constrained circumstances.
Whelan's typology for this series identified significant variation in die execution across the reign, with Type III distinguished by specific arrangement of the kufic field inscriptions.
