Moulay Sulayman's reign was marked by persistent fiscal strain and a deliberate withdrawal from the Atlantic trade networks his predecessors had cultivated. The Fes Hazrat mint — one of the oldest operating mints in the Maghreb — produced this issue during a period when the sultan was consolidating Alawi authority against tribal confederations that had fragmented central control through the late 18th century. Coinage from Fes in these years circulated alongside debased imitations, making weight-consistent silver issues the only reliable medium for large transactions.
