Obverse description Irregular, hand-struck flan displaying the Islamic declaration of faith (Shahada) in two lines of bold Arabic script centered within the field: 'La ilaha illa Allah / Muhammad rasul Allah' (There is no god but God / Muhammad is the Messenger of God). The lettering is rendered in the characteristic Maghrebi script style, with somewhat uneven strike typical of Moroccan hammered coinage of the period. The flan edges are irregular and show the rough-cut characteristics common to this series. The field is plain with no additional ornamental devices.
