Mas'ud II had one of the most turbulent reigns in the Sultanate of Rûm's final decades, restored to the throne multiple times by Ilkhanid intervention between the 1280s and his death around 1307. By the time these dirhams were struck, the Sultanate was functionally a vassal state — Ilkhanid governors held real administrative authority, and the sultan's name on the coinage was as much a political formality as a declaration of sovereignty. The Mongol overlords permitted the continuation of local silver issues largely for tax collection and market function in Anatolia's still-active trade networks.
The Rûm series ends with Mas'ud II. No subsequent sultan struck coins in his own name.
