The Banu Sumadih were a dynasty of Arab origin who ruled Almería through the fitna — the civil wars that dismembered the Umayyad Caliphate of Córdoba after 1009. Ma'n ibn Muhammad ibn Sumadih, the ruler associated with this issue, governed a prosperous coastal taifa whose wealth derived substantially from silk production and Mediterranean trade. His court became a notable center of Andalusian poetry; Ma'n himself composed verse and patronized some of the finest poets of eleventh-century al-Andalus.
Vives 1377 places this emission within the early independent coinage of the taifa period, before the Almoravid conquest of 1091 extinguished the dynasty entirely.
