Obverse description Central field contains three lines of Kufic Arabic legend reading the Islamic profession of faith: 'There is no god but God alone, He has no partner; Muhammad.' Surrounding the central inscription, a circular marginal legend in Kufic script reads the mint and date formula: 'In the name of God, this dirham was struck in al-Andalus in the year three hundred and ninety-one.' The inscriptions are arranged concentrically in the characteristic Umayyad Andalusian epigraphic style, with no figural imagery. The field is flat, typical of hammered silver coinage of the period.
