| Obverse description | Facing bust of Christ Pantocrator depicted in Byzantine style, with nimbus rendered in dotted border and cruciform halo formed by groups of pellets. The effigy shows Christ with a bearded visage, wearing a pallium with decorative loros or collar indicated by horizontal striations at the chest. The field to either side of the head bears traces of IC XC Christogram in Greek letters. The entire design is framed by a beaded or dotted inner border, reflecting the Artuqid rulers' deliberate appropriation of Byzantine Christian iconography for coinage circulating among a mixed religious population. |
