Additional information

Tochtamysh is the figure who briefly reunified the fractured Golden Horde after decades of the so-called Great Troubles — the period of near-constant civil war from the 1360s onward that had splintered the khanate among competing claimants. His Azaq mint was one of several he activated or reactivated as he consolidated control across the western steppe, and coins from this facility fall within the narrow window before Timur's devastating campaigns dismantled whatever political coherence Tochtamysh had managed to assemble. The sack of Azaq itself came in 1395.
