The inscription is arranged in horizontal registers across the flan, proclaiming the sovereignty of Sultan Toqtamish Khan with the honorific 'al-A'zam' (the Supreme). The die is struck on an irregular, slightly ragged flan typical of hammered Golden Horde silver coinage, with the letters boldly raised in relief against a flat, granular field. Dotted decorative elements separate lines of the legend. The overall execution reflects the provincial mint style of the late fourteenth-century Pontic steppe ateliers. |
