Muhammad Uzbeg Khan ruled the Golden Horde at its political and territorial apex, and his decades-long reign saw a remarkable standardization of the Jochid silver coinage across mints from Crimea to the Volga. Bulghar al-Mahrusa — "the Protected Bulghar" — was among the most productive of those mints, supplying silver to the northern trade networks connecting Rus principalities with Central Asian merchants.
The honorific epithet attached to the mint name reflects Uzbeg's Islamization policy, which formalized Sunni Islam as the state religion of the Horde after his accession in 1313.
