Jani Beg's reign over the Golden Horde coincided with the Black Death's westward passage through the steppe — the plague that devastated Caffa in 1346 after Mongol forces reportedly catapulted infected corpses over the city walls, an act often cited as the vector that carried the epidemic into Europe. This dirham was struck two years into that catastrophe, at Saray al-Jadida, the "New Saray" established earlier in the century to replace the original capital on the Akhtuba.
Sagdeeva 237 is well-attested for this mint and year, placing it firmly within Jani Beg's prolific silver coinage before the Horde's post-plague contraction began in earnest.
