Obverse description Central field bears the Shahada in three lines of bold Arabic Kufic script, reading 'La ilaha illa Allah / Muhammad / Rasul Allah' (There is no god but God, Muhammad is the Messenger of God). The legend is presented within an unbordered field on the irregularly shaped flan, characteristic of hammered coinage of the Sufid dynasty. The script is rendered in a angular, monumental Kufic style typical of late 14th-century Central Asian coinage. The flan shows slight irregularity at the edges consistent with hand-struck production.
