Dawlat Berdi was never supposed to rule. He seized the western Golden Horde during a period of catastrophic fragmentation following Edigu's assassination in 1419, when the khanate was splitting into competing successor states faster than any single claimant could consolidate. His hold on Crimea was tenuous and brief — he disappears from the historical record by the mid-1420s, outmaneuvered by rivals including Ulugh Muhammad. Coins from his Qrim mint represent one of the few durable attestations that his authority there was real, however short-lived.
