The lettering is boldly struck in relief, characteristic of hammered Golden Horde coinage, with the irregular flan edges typical of the period. No decorative border or geometric framing is present. |

Struck at Saray al-Jadida — New Saray, the later capital of the Golden Horde established on the lower Volga — this dirham dates to a period of near-continuous dynastic crisis. The 1360s saw the Horde cycle through as many as eight different khans in a single decade, a stretch of instability Rus' chroniclers called the "Great Troubles." Aziz Shaykh's reign briefly interrupted that chaos, but he too was deposed. Surviving dirhams from his Saray al-Jadida issues are documented in Sagdeeva's corpus but remain sparsely represented in Western collections.
