Obverse description Central field occupied by multi-line Arabic legend in archaic Naskh script, reading the royal titulature of Khan Shadi Beg. The inscription is arranged in horizontal lines across the flan, with scattered pellet ornaments separating the lines and filling the field. The die is struck on an irregularly shaped, slightly concave flan typical of late Golden Horde hammered coinage, with weak peripheral strikes at the edges.

Additional information

Shadi Beg's reign over the Golden Horde from roughly 1400 to 1407 coincided with the catastrophic aftermath of Timur's 1395 invasion, which had devastated the Horde's urban centers and disrupted its mint network across the steppe. That Bulghar was still producing coinage by 1404 speaks to the city's stubborn administrative persistence even as the wider Jochid political structure fractured around competing claimants. Shadi Beg himself owed his position largely to the backing of the Nogai faction, and his legitimacy was never fully consolidated.
