Mangu Timur's reign over the Golden Horde marked the first period in which the khans openly struck coins in their own name — but this piece is among the anonymous issues that predate or overlap that transition, attributed to his reign by type rather than explicit legend. The Jand mint, situated on the Syr Darya in what is now southern Kazakhstan, was among the oldest and most strategically positioned Islamic minting centers in the region, having served successive steppe powers long before the Mongol conquest.
