Obverse description Central field bears the Islamic profession of faith (Shahada) in multiple lines of Kufic Arabic script. The inscription reads the declaration of the unity of God arranged in a square format typical of Umayyad reform coinage. A circular marginal legend in Kufic script runs along the periphery of the coin, separated from the central field by a plain inner border. The overall design follows the purely epigraphic style introduced by Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan's coinage reform of 77 AH (696/698 CE), with no figural imagery.
