Obverse description Central field bears the Islamic profession of faith (Shahada) in multiple lines of Kufic Arabic script: 'There is no god but Allah alone, He has no associate.' The inscription is arranged in three or four lines within the central field, surrounded by a circular marginal legend in Kufic script. The entire design is enclosed within a series of concentric linear and pelleted border rings characteristic of Umayyad reform coinage introduced under the caliph Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan. The flan is broad and slightly irregular, typical of hammered silver production of the period.
