Obverse description Central field bears the Islamic profession of faith (Shahada) in three lines of Kufic Arabic script, reading 'There is no god but God alone, He has no partner.' An inner circle encloses the central legend, with a marginal inscription in the surrounding annulus recording the mint name al-Rayy and the regnal year of striking. The epigraphy is executed in the angular, early Kufic style characteristic of Umayyad reform coinage introduced under Caliph Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan. No figural imagery is present, in accordance with the purely epigraphic tradition established by the 698 CE monetary reform. The flan is irregularly shaped, as typical of hammered Islamic dirhams of this period.
