The shahada (declaration of faith) is distributed across the lines of the square, reading 'There is no god but God alone, He has no partner, Muhammad is the Messenger of God.' The area outside the square and within the coin's irregular round flan bears additional marginal legends naming the ruler al-Nasir Yusuf. The overall design is characteristic of Ayyubid hammered silver coinage, with bold, deeply struck calligraphy filling the available field. |

The marginal legend outside the central square records the mint and date formula in the name of God, indicating striking at Damascus in the relevant Hijri year. The flan is irregularly round, as typical of Ayyubid hammered dirhams, and the legends are boldly struck with slight weakness at the edges due to the hand-striking technique. |
