| Obverse description | Central field bears the Islamic profession of faith (Shahada) in three lines of Kufic Arabic script: 'There is no god but God alone, He has no partner.' This central inscription is enclosed within a single circular legend in Arabic commencing with 'Bismillah' at approximately 1 o'clock and reading right to left, giving the mint name and Hijri date of striking. The outer marginal legend, also in Arabic Kufic script and reading right to left from 1 o'clock, quotes Quran 30:4–5, affirming God's sovereignty and the rejoicing of believers. All legends are executed in the characteristic angular Kufic style typical of Abbasid silver coinage of the mid-third century AH. The field is otherwise plain, with no figurative imagery. |
