Obverse description Central field bears the Islamic profession of faith (Shahada) arranged in three horizontal lines within a plain inner circle: 'There is no god but God alone, He has no partner, Muhammad is the Messenger of God.' An inner marginal legend carries the Quranic verse of the mission (Quran 9:33), while the outer margin contains the mint and date formula reading 'In the name of God, this dirham was struck at [Mint Name] in the year [AH Year].' The entire design is executed in angular Kufic script with characteristic Abbasid calligraphic style on a hammered, irregularly shaped flan.
