Beschrijving voorzijde The obverse follows the classic Abbasid dirham typology, presenting four lines of Arabic Kufic script in the central field enclosed within a single linear border. A small pellet or annulet appears above the central legend. The central inscription carries the Shahada in its first part. A circular marginal legend runs between the inner border and the outer beaded rim, giving the mint name al-Muhammadiyah and the AH date 168. The margin is further punctuated by a repeating ornamental device consisting of single and paired pellets arranged in a clockwise pattern (O oo O oo O oo), typical of Abbasid dirhams of this period.
Schrift voorzijde Arabic

Beschrijving keerzijde The reverse presents the standard Abbasid reverse type, with four lines of Arabic Kufic script occupying the central field, enclosed within a single linear circle. The central legend names the Prophet Muhammad and invokes blessings upon him, followed by the title of the reigning Caliph al-Mahdi, with additional editorial marks (bakh) flanking the caliph's name. A circular marginal legend running between the inner border and the outer beaded rim contains the Quranic verse from Sura 9:33 (al-Tawba), attesting to the divine mission of the Prophet. The overall die engraving exhibits the angular, formal Kufic calligraphic style characteristic of late 2nd-century AH Abbasid coinage.
