Obverse description Central field bears the Islamic shahada in three lines of Kufic Arabic script: 'There is no deity but God alone, He has no associate.' The marginal legend, running along the inner border, records the mint and date formula: 'In the name of God, this dirham was struck at al-Basra in the year one hundred and sixty-seven.' The coin is struck on an irregularly shaped flan typical of Abbasid hammered coinage, with no figurative imagery, in keeping with Islamic artistic convention. The script is characteristic of the early Abbasid epigraphic style, with angular Kufic letterforms filling the available field.
